Mason Greenwood Makes History with Crucial Goal for Marseille

Mason Greenwood has etched his name into Marseille’s history with a decisive goal that helped his team salvage a 2-2 draw against Reims in their Ligue 1 match.

A Dramatic Turn in the Game

Marseille, managed by Roberto De Zerbi, faced an unexpected challenge during their Ligue 1 clash against Reims. The match, played at the Stade Vélodrome, began promisingly for Marseille as Amine Harit scored to give them a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. Harit has been in impressive form, contributing to three goals in the first two Ligue 1 games of the season—matching his tally from the previous 38 matches.

However, the second half saw a dramatic turn of events. Reims’ Akiime scored in the 50th minute, and Yaya Fofana followed up with another goal in the 54th minute, turning the game around and giving Reims a 2-1 lead.

De Zerbi was baffled by the turn of events and urged Marseille to push forward aggressively. Despite controlling 68% of possession and creating several opportunities, Marseille struggled to break down Reims’ defense. A notable chance for the home side came when Jonathan Rowe hit the post after breaking into the box.

Greenwood to the Rescue

As the game neared its end, Greenwood emerged as the savior. Following a poorly executed clearance by Reims’ goalkeeper Diouf on a cross from Merlin, Greenwood capitalized on the opportunity by heading the ball into the net, securing a 2-2 draw for Marseille.

This goal marked Greenwood’s third of the season in just two Ligue 1 matches. He is now the first player since Dimitri Payet in 2013 to score three goals for Marseille in their opening two games. Greenwood currently shares the top spot in the Ligue 1 goal-scoring chart with Barcola of PSG, both having scored three goals each.

Greenwood’s crucial goal not only preserved Marseille’s unbeaten start to the season but also highlighted his significance in the team’s attacking setup, showcasing his ability to make a difference in crucial moments.
