Arsenal and MU are the worst teams in the Premier League if comparing last season’s total points with the same period of this season. Surprisingly, Chelsea, despite being criticized a lot, has made more progress than the two teams mentioned above.
The Sun website recently created a ranking ranking the points of teams at this stage of the 2023/24 season compared to the same time last season.
Accordingly, there have been quite interesting surprises about the teams’ achievements this season compared to last season. Highly rated teams are in a miserable decline while highly criticized teams suddenly show improvement.
The first team mentioned is Arsenal. Coach Mikel Arteta’s team ranks first in the Premier League rankings with 50 points after 20 matches in the 2022/23 season.
But after the same number of matches in this 2023/24 season, Arsenal can only collect 40 points, 10 points less than at the same time last season. The Gunners also dropped to 4th place instead of leading like the 2022/23 season.
Arsenal’s performance is the 2nd worst out of 17 ranked teams. Accordingly, this ranking does not include newly promoted clubs Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town.
Having the same record as Arsenal are Man United and Brentford. All of these teams earned 10 points less than at the same time last season.
Accordingly, MU won 42 points after 21 matches last season while only earning 32 points after 21 matches this season. Brentford won 29 points after 19 matches last season and only got 19 points at the same stage this season.
Ranked above Arsenal, MU and Brentford is Newcastle, the team that lost the most points compared to last season. Coach Eddie Howe’s team earned 40 points after 20 matches in the 2022/23 season. But after 21 matches this season, they have only earned 29 points. That means, the Magpies earned 11 points less than at the same time last season.
On the contrary, Liverpool is the team with the best performance this season compared to last season. Jurgen Klopp’s team is currently top of the Premier League standings and is 16 points ahead of this time last season.
Also earning 16 points more than last season like Liverpool is West Ham, the team is fighting to stay relegated in January 2023, but is currently ranked 6th in January 2024.
Aston Villa (up 15 points) and Wolves (up 11 points) are the other teams to have improved by 10 points or more at this stage compared to last season. Bournemouth (9 more points) and Tottenham (4 more points) also have high rankings on the rankings of teams with better results than last season.
But perhaps the most shocking revelation was Chelsea. The London team is playing better than it was under Graham Potter 12 months ago. New coach Mauricio Pochettino has won 31 points for the Blues, 1 point more than their achievement last season.
However, Chelsea still did not improve much in the Premier League rankings. They are currently ranked 9th, 9 points behind the Top 4.
