David De Gea made the decision to continue his career by joining Fiorentina this summer, marking his return to competitive football after a year since leaving Manchester United.
Unfortunately, De Gea’s debut with Fiorentina was disastrous. He conceded three goals in a 3-3 draw against Hungarian side Puskás Akadémia in the Conference League play-offs. De Gea’s situation at Fiorentina has deteriorated significantly. The 33-year-old was dropped from the starting lineup for the match against Venezia over the weekend. He was relegated to the bench while Pietro Terracciano took the position as Fiorentina’s starting goalkeeper.
Terracciano kept a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw against Venezia, making it likely that De Gea will struggle to reclaim the starting spot in more crucial matches.
De Gea signed a one-year contract with an option for a second year at Fiorentina. After a year away from top-level football, it is evident that De Gea’s reflexes have declined.
During his time at Manchester United, De Gea made 545 appearances and won 8 trophies, including one Premier League title. Despite his illustrious career at Old Trafford, his departure was met with criticism of Manchester United for their lack of recognition for the club legend.
