Liverpool Surprises with New Signing Despite Transfer Window Closure

Liverpool has completed their latest summer signing after receiving final approval from the Premier League.

The Reds have successfully acquired talented winger Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea. In fact, the deal was approved by Liverpool back in July, but the 16-year-old prospect couldn’t play for the Merseyside club until the Premier League gave its consent due to age restrictions.

However, after a waiting period, the Premier League approved Ngumoha’s transfer on Wednesday, September 4. The Athletic highlights that Liverpool has passed the Premier League’s five-step assessment to finalize the deal. This is the standard procedure for a young player transferring between academies.

At present, Chelsea and Liverpool have yet to agree on the compensation fee for Ngumoha’s training costs, and the matter may need to be settled in court. In 2021, Liverpool was required by the court to pay Fulham £4 million in a similar case involving Harvey Elliott.

The Athletic reports that Ngumoha decided to move to Liverpool from Chelsea because he saw young players like Jarell Quansah, Conor Bradley, and Trey Nyoni getting regular opportunities in the first team.

Ngumoha has signed a scholarship contract with Liverpool and could make his debut for the U18 team at home against Blackburn Rovers on September 14. The English prospect confirmed the transfer on his Instagram on Wednesday evening, posting a photo holding Liverpool’s jersey at Anfield with the caption: “Very excited to sign with @liverpoolfc YNWA.”

Prior to Ngumoha, Liverpool had already signed two new players in the summer of 2024: goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and winger Federico Chiesa.
