The Absurdity of Judging Real Madrid’s Title Chances So Early

It’s only August and La Liga has only seen two rounds, yet some are already claiming that Real Madrid might struggle to win the league this season.

A widely liked opinion on a Spanish social media platform, quoted by Marca, states, “The performances up to the end of August suggest that Real Madrid might struggle to become La Liga champions, even with the signing of Mbappe.”

There seems to be something fundamentally wrong here. Typically, La Liga titles are decided over the course of the season, with summer performances only providing early hints. Judging the championship potential so early, before even hitting the crucial stages of the season, shows a level of impatience that is both misplaced and unwarranted.

Kylian Mbappe, a world-class striker, has yet to score in his first two La Liga matches—understandable for a new arrival needing time to adjust. Don’t be fooled by the current lack of goals; Mbappe will eventually find his rhythm. Once he integrates fully into the team and maintains his focus, he will silence critics with his performances.

In football, patience isn’t infinite, but it is essential. It eventually proves its worth and aligns everything correctly. Carlo Ancelotti, known for his wisdom and patience, embodies this approach. He has often mentioned that players can request substitutions when tired, yet in his 40 years of coaching, he has rarely seen it.

On Sunday, Ancelotti made substitutions, including bringing on Endrick and Brahim Diaz, to remind everyone of the depth and quality on the bench. However, he had earlier opted for more easily replaceable players like Arda Guler and Rodrygo. Many coaches would have substituted Vinicius and Mbappe sooner, given their performance data.

Patience is equally necessary for emerging talents like Endrick, as demonstrated by Guler’s gradual integration. Real Madrid can’t overhaul everything in one go. The players already in the starting lineup are exceptional, and substitutions are not limitless. Watch closely to see who will be the first to step up as per “Don Carlo’s” guidance, and whether the La Liga title race will indeed be decided in August!
